Work: The Worst Thing That's Good For You

I recently saw an article on the Internet about jobs. Yahoo's made a list of permanent professions - "Jobs That Will Never Go Away," they said. Oh man, is that loaded. "Never" is such a big word. They only offered 6, and frankly I'm not so sure about some of the ones they've listed.

Here's Yahoo's List: Accountant, Computer Support Specialist, Entrepreneur, Mechanic, Paramedic, and Teacher.

Accountant, sure. People have needed help keeping track of their money since ancient Babylon. (Just ask Denis Waitley.) ...Paramedic, check. Teacher, of course. Entrepreneur... uh, last I checked, that isn't a job. If it is, I am owed some seeeeerious back pay. I'll be sure to have a chat with my boss the next time I look in the mirror. I'm due for a raise, too.

Computer specialist and mechanic are suspect. They come with the caveat that if you don't keep your skills sharp, you're going to wind up going the way of the teletype operator and the paperboy. There was a time when the newspaper came out 5 times a day. When's the last time you checked your doorstep for the morning news and your 2 quarts of milk? See? Yeah, like that.

Jack's List of Timeless Occupations:

  • Undertaker
  • Tax Collector
  • Doctor
  • Inventor
  • Musician
  • Carpenter

Death and taxes aren't going away this year. Medicine's always changing, sure, but in the East and the West people will always need to take care of their bodies. Inventor - well, the pay is seldom equal to the task, but often the world is a better place for your having been around. Take a look at Nikola Tesla, the guy who came up with alternating current. Without him, you wouldn't even have the lights on. But Tesla sold his patents to Westinghouse for 10 cents on the dollar... funny guy. Musician - utterly indispensible. Carpenter... a profession that's at least 2,000 years old that we know about. Kinda goes hand in hand with Philosopher, don't you think?
